Founded in Paris in 2023 by former DeepMind and Meta researchers, Mistral AI has become Europe's flagship foundation-model company - the closest the continent has to an OpenAI or Anthropic.
Its calling card is open-weight large language models that enterprises and governments can run on their own infrastructure, a stance that has made it a default choice where data-sovereignty concerns rule out US providers.
It sells enterprise APIs, on-premise deployments and a growing product suite, and counts the French, German and Greek governments among its customers. Revenue climbed roughly 20-fold in the year to early 2026, and the company is building its own data-center capacity in Paris.
